The Heart that rattles - free crochet pattern

Following on my post about the importance of high contrast toys for babies to help them to develop their vision in their early stages of life, I have created a heart rattle toy in white, black and red. I am excited to share the pattern with you. I think it is a good pattern to start crocheting if you are a newbie. Give it a go! crocheting is fun and helps to relax!

Materials (got them from Spotlight and Hobbii):

  • acrylic or cotton yarn 8ply: red, white and black

  • crochet size 3mm (I like to crochet with a smaller crochet than advised, but you could use a 3.5mm too)

  • a bell

  • hypoallergenic filling for stuffing toys

Building the Circle

  • Chain 16sc. Start in the second chain from the hook and crochet 15sc. chain 1sc and turn.

  • Round 1 to 3 (white): Chain 15sc + 1sc and turn.

  • Round 4 to 6 (black): Chain 15sc + 1sc and turn.

  • Repeat nine times rounds 1 to 6 . Fasten off, leaving a long yarn.

Stich together the shorter ends.

Fold the crocheted piece in half so that it resembles to a long pipe. Sew together the and fill the pipe as you go (don't let the filling to the end since it will be difficult to distribute the filling evenly).

Weave in the yarn ends.

Building the Heart

Make 2 pieces in red yarn.

  • Round 1: Crochet 6sc in a magic ring (6)

  • Round 2: Crochet 2sc in each sc until finishing the round (12)

  • Round 3: Crochet 1sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat sequence until finishing the round (18)

  • Rounds 4 to 5 : 1sc in each 1cs of the previous round (18)

Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Take the 2 pieces so that you can stich 2sc from each circle together.

  • Round 6: Crochet 1sc in each sc around (32)

  • Round 7: Crochet 6sc, dec. Repeat sequence till you finish the round (28)

  • Rounds 8 to 9: Crochet 1sc in each sc of the previous round (28)

  • Round 10: Crochet 5sc, dec. Repeat sequence until you finish the round (24)

  • Round 11: Crochet 4sc, dec. Repeat sequence until you finish the round (20)

  • Round 12: Crochet 3sc, dec. Repeat sequence until you finish the round (16)

  • Round 13: Crochet 2sc, dec. Repeat sequence until you finish the round (12)

Stuff the heart with the hypoallergenic filling and include the bell.

  • Round 14: Crochet 1sc, dec. Repeat sequence till you finish the round (8)

  • Round 15: dec four times (4)

Finish to stuff the heart.

Fasten off and cut the yarn leaving a tail to close the hole.

Weave in the yearn ends.

Building the attachment

In red

  • Chain 26sc. Start in the second chain from the hook and crochet 25sc. chain 1sc and turn.

  • Rounds 2 to 4: Chain 25sc + 1sc and turn.

Crochet together the shorter ends one time but first loop it through the main ring.
